I have never understood the vitriol and hate Valentine’s Day produces. To me it is a day to show your loved ones you care for them. Yes, I have been single on this day. Heck, I’ve even gone through a painful breakup of a long-term relationship the day BEFORE Valentines! I know you should show your loved ones you care throughout the year – and I do – but let’s face it life sometimes gets in the way and this is an excuse to gorge on candy and wine. For me there is nothing wrong with a day to show love and eat junk food with the world in unison!
I get that the red and pink consumer blah blah blah is a little overbearing when you walk into a store. I feel like you should really try your best to make Valentine’s day personal to your loved ones. I am a very sentimental person, so I keep every card I get. I know not everyone is like me, but I try my best to put extra thought and care into gifts or anything I’m giving someone. Every year I create a special geeky Valentine’s day treat for the Mr… This year was no different. Want to see previous years? OF COURSE YOU DO! RAWR!!!
2009 – The Duke Nukem STABBITY STAB Cake
2010 – Pacman/Power Pellet/Mrs Pacman cupcakes
2011 – Lego cake pops (This was our first Vday being married and the worst! We both got seriously sick from tainted peanut butter! Not from the cakepops, those were chocolate…)
I started the day off making the Mr and I some heart-shaped bacon, mushroom and spinach scrambled eggs w/ cheddar and mango orange juice. I meant to make toast with strawberry jam and peaches – but I was too excited for the BACON!!!! The smell is still in my house and it’s all I want to eat, arteries be damned!! We only have it a couple of times a year, so my excitement for this dish was through the roof. Look, you can tell by the Mr. Bacon Face it was good!
Plus I was excited to give him his mini man basket. It was full of his favourite gaming treats: Redbull, Pepsi, pistachios, Craisins, Sweettarts, Reeses heart, Snickers and Twix. I say mini because the first year I made one for him I went overboard and filled it with Xbox controllers and Microsoft points as well as treats! Well, this year we have enough controllers and he’s preordered all the games he wants so all that was left was treats =) His gift to me was movie theatre popcorn with butter *insert cartoon heart eyes*. I can put that stuff away enough to make myself sick – so it really is a treat as I can’t get it often! We decided we were not going to go out and face the crowds this Vday. Instead we were going to get popcorn and order pizza and go home to watch a movie. I chose Repo! The Genetic Opera. I have seen it 6 times in the past 2 months, and the Mr was growing curious about it, having only heard bits and pieces from the other room. He turned out not liking it, but that is because he doesn’t like when antagonists are glorified. I’m the opposite. Maybe that’s a little twisted or maybe I just have a crush on Giles. I mean the Night Surgeon! Gah, I mean Anthony Steweart Head! ❤
I am not the biggest fan of Domino’s pizza, but those new parm cheese bites are fantastic. Although there was SO much garlic on the crust and the bread (I didn’t even know crust was supposed to have garlic?) that I was pretty sure someone working there was bitter and wanted to make sure no one got kissed on Valentine’s Day. JOKE’S on YOU – I LOVE GARLIC. Also the new website is really cool. Other than the fact we placed a delivery and it kicked us down to pickup without us knowing because apparently we are out of the delivery zone range. We are literally a 5 minute drive from it, so I find that hard to believe. When we finally realized this and went to pick up our pizza it had already closed for carry out that night. My husband terrified the poor kid behind the counter by tapping on the glass. It was funny watching this 6ft4 grown man with his face to the window crying, “I just want my piiiiiiiiiiizzzzzzzzza“. Quite the fiasco trying to get dinner… we missed our exit and ended up driving the 195 for quite some time before being able to turn around! In the end – So. Much. Food.
Now this Valentine’s Day I wanted to make my geek treats super special. They are inspired from my love of Zelda and the husbands love for 8 bit retro gaming. Really I just asked myself “self, how much do you hate yourself? Would you like to attempt cake pops again (they were your husband’s fave after all)? Do you want to spend hours on detail and make the kitchen explode in a mess, especially after you’ve cleaned it twice today and already put 2 loads of dishes in and out? Do you appreciate your will to live?”
Cake pops for those who don’t know are a lovely little invention by the beautiful and talented Bakerella. What you do is you make your favourite cake, mush it up and throw some icing in to make it a truffley consistency. Make shapes, put a stick in it and dip it in chocolate. If only it were that easy! She has mastered the technique and can put he most intricate and unique creative detail in her designs. I am sloppy and impatient so mine don’t turn out as great but they taste fantastic! I have since seen the world cash in on cake pops and accessories. They’ve popped up in Starbucks, in bakeries, at Michaels… I bet you all didn’t know the mastermind behind this phenomenon is Bakerella. Check out her website and show her some love!
This year I decided to do heart health bar cakepops. I call it: The 8Bit Bro-quet.
I had wrecked my brain trying to figure out just how to make the 8bit hearts. Fondant? Icing? I decided I was going to do chocolate piping and I was NOT looking forward to it. I am no good at working with delicate mediums as I am impatient and sloppy. Too watery, too thick, spreading, drying, cracking… GAH! I was pretty nervous. I ended up coming across some sugar paper ( I didn’t even know this stuff existed!) in Wegmans. Saving grace!! It is edible and easy to work with as I needed some pretty precise and sharp corners! I was going to pipe a thick black border onto them but ran out of time. The hardest part of these cake pops was the actual cake. I’m soooo not used to baking at sea level in humid conditions just yet. I miss living 4000ft above sea level! I won’t go into details, but a phone call to my mom and a food processor saved the second batch! I’m pretty happy with how the 8bit Bro-quet turned out!
I hope everyone’s day was full of love and junky goodness! Whether it’s love for your family, friends or significant other!
Happy Valentine’s Day to all!
